Endure the Traffic

405, 710, 110, 105… It doesn’t matter which way they go nor what time of the day, southern California freeways are always packed. No one likes traffic. In fact, I am sure most abhor traffic. After a long day at work, I just want to get to my destination and in 30 minutes or less. That’s practically impossible, for me. So, I do what I have to do, endure the traffic.

Yesterday while sitting in the typical after work traffic on the 710, I saw a red mustang fly by in the shoulder. The driver, was obviously in a rush or had little to no patience to sit through the bumper to bumper traffic. Moments later there was screech of brakes and BOOM, the entire passenger side of the red mustang was under a big rig. I am not sure how it happened but I do know that if Mustang’s driver would have just stayed in his lane instead of attempting to avoid the traffic he still would have had the right side of his car intact.

It wasn’t until I recounted this incident with a friend over the phone, that I had an epiphany moment. I started to think about times in life I crashed in attempt to avoid things meant for me to endure.  Yikes. I can vividly recall moments in my life I had absolutely no choice but to “grin and bear it”. There were no shortcuts, no shoulder lanes for me to hop in and out of.  And I was better for it. Way better!

Sometimes it’s not in our best interest to speed ahead and skip the grueling “traffic”. We can miss out on lessons we need to learn, people we should encounter and experiences we could gain.

A lot of different things happen along our commute, some you can control, some we cannot.  If it’s set before you, you just may be equipped to go through it, rather than going around it. Endure the traffic.
